While the best remedy for constipation is often fluids or fiber, Americans spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year on laxatives. Laxatives can be purchased over-the-counter or prescribed by a physician to help stimulate a bowel movement. The major problem with many laxatives is that they contain an ingredient known as polyethylene glycol (PEG) 3350, essentially a liquid form of plastic.
PEG 3350 is a petroleum derivative. Common side effects from this ingredient include diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. Researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia have been studying the effects of PEG 3500, the main active ingredient in Miralax and many other laxatives. Despite negative effects, many doctors are still prescribing Miralax to children.

Stimulant laxatives carry a whole other set of problems. A person can become dependent on stimulant laxatives for normal bowel function. Long-term use of laxatives has been shown to cause damage to the muscles and nerves, along with the tissues of the bowel and intestines.
While laxatives may provide temporary relief from constipation, they do not address the actual cause of the problem. Constipation is most often caused by a lack of fiber in your diet, along with inadequate water consumption.
Natural Laxatives
Stress and poor diet can have a negative effect on your digestive system. If you need a little help with it comes to bowl movements, natural laxatives in the form of foods and herbs are a whole lot safer than the over-the-counter type.
1. Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are able to work as a natural laxative in the body. They are a good source of fiber, which the body needs during constipation. Chia seeds are also able to sweel and expand in the digestive tract to help the body absorb water.
2. Flaxseeds
Flaxseeds provide your body with fiber to add bulk to your stool and help it pass through your intestines. They are known as a natural remedy for both constipation and diarrhea.
3. Leafy Green Vegetables
Leafy greens provide the body with fiber and magnesium, both of which are needed for a healthy digestive system. Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer, which can help stop painful cramping during constipation.
4. Probiotic Foods
Probiotics help create a healthy environment in your gut to keep digestive problems at bay. Try kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi and probiotic yogurt.
5. Coconut Water
Coconut water helps maintain electrolyte levels in your body, which can prevent dehydration. It’s also a healthy way to clear out your urinary tract and relieve constipation.
