Chemicals known as phthalates were banned from children\u2019s teething rings and rubber duck toys a decade ago, but it turns out they may be <span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-126\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-111\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span>lurking in a popular children\u2019s food: macaroni and cheese.<\/p>\n<h3>Harmful Chemical Found In Macaroni And Cheese<\/h3>\n<p>Phthalates have <span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-127\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-112\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span>been shown to disrupt male hormones. They\u2019ve also been linked to genital birth defects in infant boys, along with learning and behavior problems in older children. Macaroni and cheese mixes that contain powdered cheese may contain these chemicals that are dangerous to young children. Phthalates also pose a risk to pregnant women.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4402\" src=\"http:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/box-macarroni-cheese.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/box-macarroni-cheese.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/box-macarroni-cheese-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/box-macarroni-cheese-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/box-macarroni-cheese-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A new study found <span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-136\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-146\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span>phthalates in 29 out of 30 cheese products tested. The highest concentrations were found in the highly processed cheese powder in boxed macaroni and cheese mixes. Nine of the products that were tested were made by Kraft. Researchers checked for 13 different phthalates and found all but two. Some of the products contained up to six different phthalates in a single sample.<span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-128\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-106\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The study was conducted by an independent laboratory and paid for by environmental advocacy groups, including Environmental Health Strategy Center, Ecology Center, Healthy Babies Bright Futures and Safer States.\u00a0Executive director of the Environmental Health Strategy Center, Mike Belliveau, explained, \u201cThe phthalate concentrations in powder from mac and cheese mixes were more than four times higher than in block cheese and other natural cheeses like shredded cheese, string cheese and cottage cheese.\u201d<span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-141\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-115\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The study included 10 different varieties of macaroni and cheese, including some that were labeled organic. Each variety contained high levels of phthalates, suggesting that buying organic won\u2019t help you avoid the chemical. Belliveau said, \u201cOur belief is that it\u2019s in every mac n\u2019 cheese product \u2013 you can\u2019t shop your way out of the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4403\" src=\"http:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bow-macarroni-cheese-orange.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bow-macarroni-cheese-orange.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bow-macarroni-cheese-orange-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bow-macarroni-cheese-orange-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bow-macarroni-cheese-orange-960x640.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bow-macarroni-cheese-orange-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In a 2014 report to the Consumer Product Safety Commission<span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-118\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span>, federal agencies were urged to assess the risks of phthalates. The report showed that food, drugs and beverages were the main source of exposure to phthalates.<span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-130\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A petition created by environmental and food safety groups to remove all phthalates from food was delayed last year.
