The Environmental Defense Fund analyzed 11 years of federal data and found<span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-126\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-111\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span>detectable levels of lead in 20% of 2,164 samples of baby food.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Aparna Bole, pediatrician at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children\u2019s Hospital in Cleveland explained, \u201cLead can have a number of effects on children and it\u2019s especially harmful during critical windows of development. The largest burden that we often think about is neurocognitive that can occur even at low levels of lead exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3659\" src=\"http:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/baby-eating-baby-food-e1497712555719-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/baby-eating-baby-food-e1497712555719-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/baby-eating-baby-food-e1497712555719-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/baby-eating-baby-food-e1497712555719-449x300.jpg 449w, https:\/\/www.loveforhealthyfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/baby-eating-baby-food-e1497712555719.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The samples were not identified by brand, but the toxic metal was most commonly found in fruit juices, root vegetables and cookies or teething biscuits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the levels are thought to be relatively low, no safe lead level in children has been identified.<span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-128\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-106\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Environmental Protection Agency estimated that over 5% of children consume more than 6 micrograms of lead per day in their diet \u2013 the maximum daily intake level set by the Food and Drug Administration back in 1993. <span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-141\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-115\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span>Environmental Defense Fund chemical policy director Tom Neltner found that food is the major source of lead exposure in two-thirds of toddlers.<\/p>\n<p>Lead may be making its way into the food through contaminated soil, but Nelner believes that processing may be playing a role as well. \u201cI can\u2019t explain it other than I assume baby food is processed more,\u201d he said.<span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-139\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-143\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to an FDA statement<span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-121\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-116\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-137\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-138\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span>, \u201cThe FDA is continuing to work with industry to further limit the amount of lead in foods to the greatest extent feasible, especially in foods frequently consumed by children.
